Artificial Turf Fields to be Built in Petaluma, CA

Artificial turf fields are on their way to Petaluma, CA. Three artificial turf fields are scheduled to be installed at a Petaluma park. Artificial turf fields will also be installed later at two high schools who are following suit. Parents have expressed their concerns however concerning risk of bacterial infections, heat conduction, the effects of crumb rubber, and increased risk of physical injuries to players. One parent says that her son suffered a staph infection after scraping his elbow at a summer sports camp in Berkeley last summer. Experts say however that there is no elevated risk of bacterial infections as long as the artificial turf sports field is bleached and cleaned properly regularly. They say that bacterial infections are much more likely to occur from exposure to bacteria in locker rooms. Regarding increased risk of physical injury, experts say that there is nothing inherently risky about synthetic turf itself. Rather, what increases the risks is cleat size. Taller cleats are more hazardous than smaller cleats. Officials are currently researching alternatives to crumb rubber. Some possible alternatives are coconut and organic cork. Finally, official say that the increased playing time and lack of maintenance issues they'll face with the artificial turf outweighs any of the negative risks. ...

Artificial Turf at the 2016 Olympics in Rio

It seems that artificial turf just can't be held back these days! The benefits for sports fields, for instance, are too great to be ignored or suppressed. It is quickly becoming the standard sports surface material for the most popular sports like soccer and football, but it is also gaining traction for other sports, too. One of them is field hockey. In fact, artificial turf will be installed on a field hockey field that will be played on during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The company producing the artificial turf says that the turf will be durable, very low maintenance, and supply a uniform surface across the entire field, with no ruts or shifting areas, and without requiring intervals between games for maintenance and repairs. This would have been unheard of with natural grass. After the Olympic Games end, the artificial turf surface will continue to yield benefits to the local community, too. It will allure out of town visitors playing on the field in tournaments, who will in turn spend money at local hotels and merchants, boosting the economy. Furthermore, it will encourage physical activity among the populace, and increase camaraderie among people who visit to cheer on their favorite teams as spectators.   ...

Oregon High School Maximizes Field Usage With Synthetic Turf

A high school in Keizer, OR, is beginning to raise money for a new sports field to be installed with synthetic turf. The high school, McNary High School, says if it raises $1 million, they'll be able to get rid of their irregular and inconvenient natural grass field which has patches of dead grass scattered across its face and replace it with synthetic turf, which will save the school district money and increase usability. The school hopes to start converting their current fields to synthetic turf this summer and to have it completed by the next school year.

Among other motivations for wanting to convert the field to synthetic turf is that with so many sports being played on it, it was constantly getting torn up. Installing synthetic turf will eliminate this problem. In fact, according to the report, while the natural grass field can host around 150 activities, synthetic turf on the other hand is able to host around 1,500 -- making synthetic turf the perfect solution for their current usage woes. By installing synthetic turf the fields will be usable by several other teams and clubs to whom they've been previously unusable.

The committee estimates that synthetic turf will save the school districts will save at least $25,000 a year on maintenance expenses.

Indeed, synthetic turf saves school districts money and increase community camaraderie by allow more group activities and opportunities for socializing. It's only a matter of time before synthetic turf becomes the standard groundcover for local high school sports fields.

Artificial Grass. The Controversy of Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

The controversy about rather keep wasting millions of gallons of water every year or revamp the San Francisco's Beach Chalet Soccer Fields is still an ongoing six years debate. People love their soccer fields that have been a wildlife habitat for various species of animals and birds, but the management of the city parks has several concerns.    Phil Ginsburg, San Francisco Parks and Recreation director, does not question the safety of the field pierced with the gopher's holes. The injuries are inevitable, and the surface is dangerous for athletes and children to play on. A recent water drought in California screams for the artificial grass along with rising water and maintenance costs.    The opponents that represent the city people  don't like the idea of turning the Golden Gate park into a "dead" field. A recent media run on the rubber infill that suspected to "cause cancer", worry soccer moms a lot more than knee injuries. The artificial grass has not been around for long. It is fairly new concept. Most people don't realize that there is a multitude of  infill solutions. There are 100% organic silica sand, green sand, and volcanic infill. The rubber infill is overrated in the prevention of traumas, and long replaced by shock pads and lawn pads in all countries. The legal battle about  Beach Chalet soccer fields has been taking a long while. But the water conservation concerns in California must be a turning point. Bermudagrass, the first choice for soccer, has never been native to San Francisco, the land of poppies, Deer and a Purple Needle grass. The Golden Gate park was originated from the sand and shore dunes.  While the city authorities stumble upon the water shortage issues, most sports fields in the state are slowly reconstructing its surfaces into the drought-acceptable artificial grass alternative. This change will help to keep our sports programs running smoothly throughout the year while keeping the feel, the appearance and reducing the risk of injuries for athletes.  ...

Artificial Grass Business Booming In North Texas!

Companies that manufacture or install artificial lawns are experiencing a boom in business, due to the drought-like conditions and watering restrictions in many North Texas cities. But the synthetic lawns today aren't the same plastic AstroTurf made popular in the 1970s. The products on the market now, are not just used for putting greens and football fields either. Tim Dvorak, owner of the company Synthetic Grass Pro, and gets calls every day from homeowners inquiring about artificial grass. "I discussed this with many turf manufacturers, that's a big thing they notice. As soon as there are drought restrictions, watering restrictions, or an ordinance like the City of Dallas two-days a week restriction, it really just makes this industry explode," said Dvorak. Today's synthetic lawns are made to stay cool underfoot, drain water well, and last for 10-15 years. The products come in different shades of green, different textures, and mimic different varieties of natural grass. Choosing artificial can be expensive upfront: prices range from $7.50 to $15 a square foot.   Many homeowners with artificial grass installed in their yards feel that the investment was worth it. "The initial cost is expensive, but it's already paid for itself over the four years. Not having to re-sod it, not having to water. The yard guys[come less often]. So it's more than paid for itself," said Dvorak. Many homeowners can be skeptical at the beginning, until they see the fake grass first-hand.  Not all cities in North Texas are on board with artificial grass, though. Frisco does not allow artificial turf at this time, and many homeowners' associations have rules. Highland Park passed an ordinance restricting artificial turf to back yards. Other cities, however, have no rules in place limiting synthetic grass. Those cities include Dallas, Arlington, Denton, and University Park. ...
