Artificial Turf is a Hit Among High School Baseball Teams

Artificial turf is a new hit among baseball players. One high school team in Nevada had artificial turf installed in their baseball field and the players and coach love it. It cost the school a quarter of a million dollars to install the turf. This initial cost will be recouped later on in money they save on maintenance. The coach says that he's wanted to install the artificial turf in the baseball field for years. The main reason they installed the artificial turf is the weather. During the stormy spring season, for example, the team had to spend countless hours waiting for the field to be repaired after rainfall. Now that they have artificial turf installed, they can be playing on the field in as little as an hour after rainfall. The players love it too. The shortstop says that the artificial turf gives the field a uniform surface so that he can anticipate where the ball is going to go and how it will bounce on the field. No more bad hops. Also, when sliding into the base, he says it's like sliding on really nice grass every time. The coach expects the artificial turf field to last 12 to 14 years.   ...

Artificial Turf Fields to be Built in Petaluma, CA

Artificial turf fields are on their way to Petaluma, CA. Three artificial turf fields are scheduled to be installed at a Petaluma park. Artificial turf fields will also be installed later at two high schools who are following suit. Parents have expressed their concerns however concerning risk of bacterial infections, heat conduction, the effects of crumb rubber, and increased risk of physical injuries to players. One parent says that her son suffered a staph infection after scraping his elbow at a summer sports camp in Berkeley last summer. Experts say however that there is no elevated risk of bacterial infections as long as the artificial turf sports field is bleached and cleaned properly regularly. They say that bacterial infections are much more likely to occur from exposure to bacteria in locker rooms. Regarding increased risk of physical injury, experts say that there is nothing inherently risky about synthetic turf itself. Rather, what increases the risks is cleat size. Taller cleats are more hazardous than smaller cleats. Officials are currently researching alternatives to crumb rubber. Some possible alternatives are coconut and organic cork. Finally, official say that the increased playing time and lack of maintenance issues they'll face with the artificial turf outweighs any of the negative risks. ...

Artificial Turf at the 2016 Olympics in Rio

It seems that artificial turf just can't be held back these days! The benefits for sports fields, for instance, are too great to be ignored or suppressed. It is quickly becoming the standard sports surface material for the most popular sports like soccer and football, but it is also gaining traction for other sports, too. One of them is field hockey. In fact, artificial turf will be installed on a field hockey field that will be played on during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The company producing the artificial turf says that the turf will be durable, very low maintenance, and supply a uniform surface across the entire field, with no ruts or shifting areas, and without requiring intervals between games for maintenance and repairs. This would have been unheard of with natural grass. After the Olympic Games end, the artificial turf surface will continue to yield benefits to the local community, too. It will allure out of town visitors playing on the field in tournaments, who will in turn spend money at local hotels and merchants, boosting the economy. Furthermore, it will encourage physical activity among the populace, and increase camaraderie among people who visit to cheer on their favorite teams as spectators.   ...

Pennsylvania County School Board Votes on Synthetic Turf Field

A school board in Middletown, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, are weighing the pros and cons of installing synthetic turf in one of their school's sports field. And synthetic turf seems to be in the lead. The school board will vote this week on whether to move forward with the $1.5 million project.

Because of the field's drainage issues, they are considering synthetic turf. Installing synthetic turf would increase the usability of the field, which with the current natural grass surface can only support 40 events per year. Synthetic turf would support 400, ten times that of natural turf. This increased usability would allow all of the clubs and sports teams to have access to the field and increase student morale.

The investment of a natural turf upgrade would be less initially but over ten years the cost to maintain would be $595,000. Synthetic turf, on the other hand, would cost $1.57 million but would allow the field to be leased out to interested groups, generating income for the entire district, and wouldn't require any maintenance.

Some pointed out in the school board meeting that no matter what materials is installed in the fields the tendency is to let groups use the fields for free, which costs are deducted from taxpayer money.

School Sells Ad Space on Field Surface to Pay for Synthetic Turf

For many high schools, installing synthetic turf gives their teams a competitive edge. The synthetic turf surface allows them to practice on the field 365 days a year, no matter the weather conditions, and habituates them to playing on a surface material that is quickly becoming the standard material in high school sports. However, installing the synthetic turf in the field can be prohibitively expensive for many high schools.

A high school in Belleville, IL, has taken a novel approach to raising the necessary funds to pay for their new synthetic turf field. The high school has sold ad space on the surface of the field itself to local companies. The field currently has 20 ads displayed in panels in the synthetic turf itself, including a local Chick-Fil-A. Additional funding for the synthetic turf field came from clubs and donations.

The ad panels are currently sold for five-year periods, and when the companies want to remove the ads, all the high school has to do is cut out the turf with the ad display on it and replace it with a synthetic turf that matches the color of the rest of the field, or replace it with a new ad-paneled synthetic turf.

It's a proven effective option of raising money to pay for synthetic turf fields that you may want to propose at your next school board meeting.

Delaware Sports Complex to Be Reinvented With Synthetic Turf

A whopping twelve synthetic turf fields will be brought to a sports facility, Kent County Regional Sports Complex, in Kent County, Delaware. The entire project will cost $24 million dollars, but the complex is projected to bring in $24 million of revenue to the local community every year once the synthetic turf complex is open to the public.

Specifically, the organizers hope for the synthetic turf field complex to act as a general activity space for sports and non-sports activities alike. By hosting important sports tournaments as well as festivals and music and entertainment alongside, they expect the complex to attract visitors from out of state who will deposit money into the local economy by staying at hotels and eating at local restaurants for days at a time.

Furthermore, the organizers say that maintaining the synthetic turf fields will cost only one-fourth of what it would cost if natural grass were installed in the fields and that playability will be relatively doubled.

The organizers got the idea from a similar synthetic turf complex in Maryland that has been a large source of revenue for the surrounding community and that revenue generation has been increasing by 5% every year. They hope to have the same results with their own synthetic turf complex in Kent County.

Synthetic Turf Field Politics

The controversy around crumb rubber infill continues as a new in-depth piece in the USA Today was published today surveying the political dispute occurring between school synthetic turf sports field superintendents, environmental agencies, and consumer protection agencies.

On the one hand, the Consumer Product Safety commission is being criticized for publishing a headline in 2008 proclaiming that synthetic turf with crumb rubber infills was "OK to install, OK to play on," despite the fact that the tests they had conducted were not conclusive.

Furthermore, the Environmental Protection Agency has historically supported the use of crumb rubber infills in synthetic turf fieldsd in their effort to recycle old car tires. Due to recent political pressure, they have stated that the safety of such rubbers is not conclusive.

And on the other hand, schools are reticent to allow their turf fields to be tested for fear of negative publicity and having to pay to have their turf fields replaced, which costs more than $1 million, if the tests prove that the fields are harmful to children.

And on still another hand, the Synthetic Turf Council have touted the obvious benefits of synthetic turf, reduced maintenance costs and water savings, etc.

It seems that the debate around synthetic turf crumb rubber infill will just have to continue until conclusive tests have been completed.

Oregon High School Maximizes Field Usage With Synthetic Turf

A high school in Keizer, OR, is beginning to raise money for a new sports field to be installed with synthetic turf. The high school, McNary High School, says if it raises $1 million, they'll be able to get rid of their irregular and inconvenient natural grass field which has patches of dead grass scattered across its face and replace it with synthetic turf, which will save the school district money and increase usability. The school hopes to start converting their current fields to synthetic turf this summer and to have it completed by the next school year.

Among other motivations for wanting to convert the field to synthetic turf is that with so many sports being played on it, it was constantly getting torn up. Installing synthetic turf will eliminate this problem. In fact, according to the report, while the natural grass field can host around 150 activities, synthetic turf on the other hand is able to host around 1,500 -- making synthetic turf the perfect solution for their current usage woes. By installing synthetic turf the fields will be usable by several other teams and clubs to whom they've been previously unusable.

The committee estimates that synthetic turf will save the school districts will save at least $25,000 a year on maintenance expenses.

Indeed, synthetic turf saves school districts money and increase community camaraderie by allow more group activities and opportunities for socializing. It's only a matter of time before synthetic turf becomes the standard groundcover for local high school sports fields.

Good luck, Bullard Knights!

We want our kids to be winners. But it might be difficult to tune up with success when a school field you're spend two-three hours every day, five days a week doesn't inspire your go-get-it-spirit. Jaime Maxey, a coach of Bullard Knights softball team agrees with this idea. Here is what she wrote to the president of Global Syn-Turf:"Dear Andrew... The turf that you helped make possible at Bullard High School is amazing. I've been coaching for 13 years and it is by far the best field upgrade I've done. Other teams and coaches love it too. We are the first softball team in our area to put down turf, but I think it will be something other programs do. Thank you so much for your generosity. It really makes the kids feel special...Coach Jaime Maxey" In many schools, sports are so entrenched that no one realizes their actual cost. With synthetic turf, it is not just about look, not just about kid's safety, but also about water bills and cutting down maintenance expenses. With a water drought in California, many schools turn their attention to synthetic turf options. Also, big thanks to HTP Nursery, for an excellent job with GST synthetic turf installation at Bullard Knights!   Go, Knights, go! ...
